Can You Crack It? That Forgotten Netherlands Creation Which Forged the Modern World
One can find many candidates for the designation as “planet’s most significant invention.” The circular axle. The printing press. The combustion motor.
As per a new book, though, that honor belongs to the automated timber mill invented through Dutch inventor Cornelis Corneliszoon in 1593.
“Before automated sawing, constructing a simple trading ship necessitated around 10 sawyers working over three months,” notes Jaime Dávila. “With wind-powered sawmills, the same quantity of cut lumber might be manufactured in less than seven days.”
Thanks to their rapid mechanical saw, which converted logs into planks with almost no manual labor, Dutch builders could construct vessels faster than anyone else, an advantage that sparked one hundred years of Netherlands naval, economic as well as cultural supremacy in Europe and the globe.
The Original Genuine Industrial Machine
The inventor's lumber mill, argues the writer, represented “humanity’s first true industrial machine.” A windmill turned a gear. A single part transformed the circular motion to vertical action for the saw. Another component transformed that same rotary movement into a lateral movement feeding the timber toward the cutter. A ratchet system shifted the log forward a measured step per cycle.
“Every component was simple by itself. Corneliszoon’s genius lay in how to integrate them in order that the machine acted in a perfectly controlled sequence, cutting on every descending motion while moving on every return stroke. This constituted a remarkably intelligent use of fundamental components.”
A fact that leads us to the current challenge. The task is for you to reimagine one of the fundamental ideas underpinning Corneliszoon’s machine.

Construct a machine which converts circular movement to up-and-down action. You have these items only: A rotating disc. Two pegs. Two rods. A “guide”, that is a cylinder or sleeve into which a single the rods can slide perfectly. (Consider that it is possible to put things on a stand, so that the components don’t fall down.)
