Catherine's Yearly Christmas Musical Celebration Honours Community Volunteers

Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her customary Yuletide celebration at the historic Abbey, with attendees featuring dignitaries, stars, and everyday helpers who have supported their local areas.

The large audience will listen to a blend of festive songs, musical performances, and spoken word pieces from actors such as Kate Winslet and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Focusing on Compassion and Love

The focus of the service, held in the candle-lit Abbey on Friday afternoon, is kindness and showing love to others.

Among the guests will be Jonathan and Anna Cordiner, whose young girl was lost to a tumour, and who set up a charity, Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to help households where there is a child with a terminal illness.

"The dedication, empathy, and kindness you show, often quietly and unspoken, and without any hope for reward or acknowledgement, make an extraordinary difference to the well-being of people," the Princess expressed in a note prior to the festive gathering.

Carefully Paced Reappearance

The princess has been making her own gradual return to public life following her health challenges and treatment, last month delivering her initial major address in two years, in which she talked about recognising the "quiet, often invisible work of caring".

Music and Opportunity

Those coming to the Abbey will be entertained by young musicians backed by the Future Talent charity, established in part by the late Duchess of Kent to increase availability of instrumental training.

Carys Wood, aged 18, who plays the trumpet and is from southwest Wales, has been supported by the organisation, with grants helping towards equipment, teaching, and travel fees - and she said it was "awesome" to be performing at the evening's event.

"Music can be very expensive," the musician remarked. She is now enrolled at the renowned conservatoire, and added that "all people deserve the chance" to hone their artistic talents.

A Family Affair

Carys's 11-year-old sister, Eliza, who plays the euphonium, will be present at the Abbey. "I never imagined I would perform in front of so many notable figures," she said.

Attending the service will be representatives of different generations.

That will encompass Saphia Turner, aged nine, honouree of a youth community award, who creates and sells art and completes fundraising tasks to raise money for local food charities.

Yuletide Atmosphere and Acts

The Abbey has been festooned with specially made wreaths, with well-known chef Mary Berry and flower expert Simon Lycett helping to make them.

Among the musical performers will be Katie Melua, the Abbey's own choir and a nautical singing ensemble, the group Fisherman's Friends, who said the chance to take part was "a dream come true."

This annual carol service will be aired by ITV1 on Christmas Eve.
