Cowboys Proprietor Jones Fined $250,000 for ‘Accidental’ Offensive Signal toward Fans
The National Football League has levied a hefty $250,000 fine on Cowboys proprietor Jones for what he claims was an “inadvertent” offensive hand signal made toward attendees during a recent game at MetLife Stadium.
Widely circulated footage seemed to capture Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, but Jones insists he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Cowboys fans in attendance as his team clinched a 37-22 victory.
“It was regrettable. It was kind of an exchange with our fans seated near me,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “Present was a large group of Dallas supporters—not New York fans, our fans. The entire stadium was brimming with enthusiasm for the Cowboys.”
He further emphasized that the signal was entirely accidental, happening amid the elation following the team’s final touchdown. “I simply showed the wrong finger,” he remarked. “It was accidentally performed. This is sincere. Should you call it accidental, you can. But it got corrected rapidly.”
League Context for Proprietor Fines
This is not the initial instance an league proprietor has been fined for misconduct. Previous examples include:
- Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for tossing a beverage at spectators in early 2024.
- Then Titans proprietor Adams was issued a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a similar offensive signal.
Jones, who is recognized for his publicity flair, reportedly has an approximate wealth of around $16bn, making the penalty manageable for the billionaire owner.
Offseason Issues and Media Spotlight
The incident comes after a contentious offseason for Jones, who faced widespread backlash from the Dallas supporters after the team traded star pass rusher Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers.
Additionally, Jones was a prominent figure in a streaming series that explored his influence in building the Cowboys into the world’s most valuable sports franchise, despite its recent title shortcomings.
The NFL’s action to penalize Jones highlights its continuing initiative to uphold proper behavior among all franchise representatives, irrespective of their position or wealth.
