Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay System in 2025.
Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in implementing video review technology.
Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships this year.
Athletes are granted the ability to challenge particular calls from the chair umpire, echoing the system currently in place at both the US Open and the Australian Open.
The new system will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.
This development comes just a season following the All England Club implemented ELC, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line judges.
Reviewable Decisions
Players cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to review specific situations, including:
- If a ball has bounced twice.
- If a shot touched an rival's racket or person during play.
- Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.
Notably, there will be no cap on the number of reviews a player can initiate.
Case in Point
An illustrative case occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."
The umpire watched a video and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.
Growing Trend
Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.
Other Changes
Another innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses situations where fans have occasionally been unsure if a shot was out or in.
Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
